Catching Up: 7 Favorites from Last Week

Alrright. Sorry about the lack of updates from this side of the Colossal camp. No excuses though. None, in fact. Instead I'm just going to share my favorite finds of the week with the promise that updates will be more consistent in the near future. The following aren't really in any sort of order, although I did save my two favorites for last. Be sure to check out everything, but especially the last. Catch 'em after the jump.

Blithe Field
"Crushing"
This is just a nice, simple tune, made sentimental with puppies and children. Puppies! Blithe Field (Spender Radcliffe) just recently signed to Waaga and is soon releasing his debut LP, Two Hearted, on June 28th. In the mean time, you can grab more of his work via his bandcamp.

Battles
"Ice Cream" (NSW)

This video has all of my favorite things: hot girls eating ice cream, hot girls hoola-hooping, hot girls licking pinecones. All set to a catchy tune with some of the slickest production I've seen lately. Definitely a fun one. Catch it and more on Battles' sophmore effort, Gloss Drop, out June 7th via Warp.

Stereo Wildlife
"Everything Illuminated"
I can't deny that the thing that initially attracts me to this song are the hazed-out guitar sounds and vocal sampling that recalls The Campfire Headphase-era Boards of Canada. Things move to dancey and then back to the original sound with impeccable ease. Catch the rest of the album, titled The Lighthouse, by going to the band's web site.

Pure X
"You're In It Now"
Pure X, and even this song, have actually been around for a couple years, although until recently they were known as Pure Ecstasy. With the name change comes a revamped version of this song, which seems content with it's downplayed squalor. It moves along at such an easygoing chug that it could be looped continuously and I really wouldn't have any problem with that. Pure X is finally putting out a debut LP, Pleasure, out July 5th via Acéphale records.

Todd Reynolds/Paul de Jong
"Inward Bound"

The first thing you need to know is that Paul de Jong, who composed the music and made the video, is one half of experimental sound collage band, The Books. This is incredibly obvious as soon as the video starts. Todd Reynolds performs it on the violin, while de Jong accompanies on the cello. Anything The Books is good, and anything this visually delicious to accompany it is fantastic.

Min Ronnersjö
"Untitled"
I don't know anything about Min Ronnersjö. Initial google searches reveal nothing except for duplicate returns for this song. Bandcamp returns nothing as well. It's a shame, because this is probably the most beautiful song from last week. Mixing a pleasant guitar riff that constantly moves forward and back, tropical percussion, and just the right amount of electronic touches, it's only fault is that it ends all too soon with the two and a half minutes that cages the song. Minn Ronnersjö, I don't know who you are, but more of this. Please.

dÉbruit
"Mezdé"

This is absolutely my favorite video in a long, long time. The song incorporates all sorts of Turkish musical devices, all moving together perfectly, thanks to London-based producer, dÉbruit (Xavier Thomas>. And while the song itself would be enough to be noteworthy, the absolutely gorgeous animation style really shines a unique cultural light on it, making the entire thing seem like a trans international work of art.
